You’re listening to Episode 13 of The Business Family. On today’s episode we chat with Jasmine and Dr. Mike Sassack of Family Tree Holistic Health.

As soon as they got married, Mike jumped into full-time schooling to become an acupuncturist with dreams of opening his own practice. After graduation, Jasmine and Mike bought a house in which they could have an office. In the midst of this all, they licensed for foster care and started taking in children who needed a safe home and family. Since these early days, the Sassacks have had 3 different office locations, learned how to market effectively to get people in the door (hello, Groupon!) and have grown a thriving practice complete with employees, a business partner and clients who love them!

And if that weren’t enough, they have also had 20 children be a part of their home through foster care, given birth to 2 children, and adopted 4. This is an incredible story and a beautiful testament to always living into your values.

You’re listening to episode 9 of The Business Family! Today, we sat down with Ryan and Jacquelyn Brennan of Pilates + Coffee in Chicago. And oh, man not only is this a crazy and amazing story but these two are some of the most thoughtful people we know! We talk about starting your business in the midst of massive change, leaning into your network to help drive you forward and how to successfully be in business with your significant other!

We start off talking about the insane story of how Pilates + Coffee came to be. It all started when Jacquelyn found out the pilates studio she was working at was planning to sell or close down in the next year or so. She could have joined another studio or maybe even opened or own but Ryan, her husband, had other ideas. While at one of the first ever retreats for The Teacher’s Collective, Jacquelyn got an 18-page business plan for a new business call Pilates + Coffee (P+C). This little dream quickly became something that the Brennans thought they would someday pursue but they found themselves pregnant with their son. Even then, they used their network of friends and fellow business owners to start them down the path of opening up this new business of theirs.

But when their son was a week old, Jacquelyn got a phone call she’ll never forget - her studio had been sold and it wasn’t what it was going to be. So they signed the lease and began build out for P+C. When their son was 4 months old, P+C was officially open for business.

But this was a group effort. Jacquelyn and Ryan give credit to all of the people in their life that helped them along the way including Ipsento Coffee, Real Good Juice and more.

And finally the fun part - working together as a married couple! It is a delicate balance but the Brennans do it with such grace because they know exactly what their roles are within the business.

This is a don’t miss kind of episode and we had so much fun sitting down the the two of them!

One of the most key decisions we made for our business was moving to Chicago back in 2017. So come along on the crazy journey it took for us to get there - you won’t believe some of the things that happened!

We decided that Mike was going to pursue photography full-time and we thought it would be best if we moved to Chicago to that. We sat down and crunched the numbers together and quickly figured out that we couldn’t afford to live in Chicago. So we came up with a plan…

You’re listening to Episode 5 of The Business Family! Today we’re talking with Dr. Tom, who happens to be Mike’s brother, and Lauren Williams of Roots Family Chiropractic. We had a front row seat to this rollercoaster of a story and now you are along for the ride. In today’s episode Dr. Tom talks about the ins and out of a business plan and getting a bank loan, we talk about how to create value for your clients and just how important your “why” is. So let’s jump on in!

Tom and Lauren met in college and got married while they were both still in grad school. They literally went back to school and work the Monday after they got married! Tom and Lauren opened up Roots Family Chiropractic right after Tom graduated. Dr. Tom was the chiropractor and Lauren was the office manager. A month after the office opened they found out they were pregnant with their son, Oliver! Oliver started coming with them to the office after Lauren was home for 2 weeks. Tom was able to be flexible with his schedule in order to be home with Lauren and Oliver. Lauren actually was in labor at their office!

The reason they opened Roots Family Chiro together in Chicago was because they wanted to live in Chicago and they wanted to take care of families in a unique way - especially kids with unique sensory challenges.

Tom was dubbed “Dr. Dad” aka The Baby Wearing Chiropractor for wearing Oliver in the office while they worked and was featured on National News! Because they had no other employees, they really didn’t have a choice so Oliver came along! They wanted to really take advantage of that 4th trimester for bonding.

When Oliver started to become more active and have more wants and needs they realized that they needed to make a transition in order to let Lauren be fully present at their office. Once the “stranger danger” development stage hit Oliver wanted only Tom or Lauren and it wasn’t becoming feasible to keep him in the office.

Dr. Tom originally wanted to work as an associate doctor for the chiropractors that inspired him to go to chiropractic school. But once he got to school he saw a whole different side of chiropractic. Dr. Tom was torn because he didn’t want to open his own practice. He felt lost and alone and which left him feeling anxious and depressed. One guest speaker changed his mind and from then on he knew he had to open up his own practice in order to see his new vision come to life.

Dr. Tom and Lauren didn’t get the skill set needed in order to open a successful chiropractic office. Their school provided a few business classes ran by professors who no longer had a business and never really had a thriving business to begin with. So Tom gathered as much information about business plans that he could get from other chiropractors before him and built his own business plan.

If you’ve never seen a business plan or had to write one in order to pitch it to investors or banks, let me tell you, they are a beast! It includes everything from your target marketing to marketing strategy to initial overhead needs and more. This document, that was over 50 pages long, was what Dr. Tom took with him to the banks (printed off and bound)!

When you open up an actual office you need cash! So it was time to secure funding. Dr. Tom talked to 13-15 banks  and tried to originally secure a $150,000 loan (very conservative in tersm of business loans) and they all said no. The banks just didn’t see how the numbers would add up with zero assets, zero experience and zero clients that Roots Family was already seeing. So Dr. Tom decided to go bare bones and whittled his business plan down to $50,000. The banks still said no because Dr. Tom had no assets.

He ended up getting an SBA loan that is backed by the government and the bank is only on the hook for 10-15%. He was introduced to a bank in Florida who had lent to chiropractors before and they were able to secure a $75,000 loan.

Even with cutting corners to make things more affordable, the money ran out fast. In hindsight, Dr. Tom realizes that the was willing to put too much on the line in order to open his practice and if he had to do it again he would have been more risk adverse and tried to do things to decrease overhead.

At this point, Roots Family Chiropractic is their life. There is no backup plan. And Tom and Lauren know that they not only have to make this business work for their own lives but also for all the lives that they are impacting. This clarity into their “why” lead them through all of the struggle and hardships that they’ve endured to open up their practice and gets them through the hard time still! It’s such a testament to the importance of knowing your why.

One of the things that Tom and Lauren do a great job is showing their value. They don’t just tell people what their value is they actually help them to discover that value for themselves.

If they each had to give one piece of advice Dr. Tom would say that he would be more risk adverse and Lauren would say to be honest with yourself what you want your business or your role in it to look like.

Pivoting, Attracting Your Ideal Clients and Healthy Conflict with your Partner

with Dana Magnus

You’re listening to Episode 4 of The Business Family! On today’s episode we talk to Dana Magnus of Dana Frames and The MTKG Brand. And man oh man I don’t know how we managed to pack in this much wisdom in one episode! We talk about pivoting to meet a need, how to have healthy conflict with your partner and mission driven marketing. You’re not going to want to miss a single second so here we go!

Where can you find Dana?

@thedanamagnus

@themktgbrand

What resources does she recommend?

The Enneagram Test

Dana and her husband, Bob, met when Dana was working full-time and doing her photography business on the side. She got her degree in marketing and got a taste of the corporate world while her husband jumped into corporate America all in working for Deloite.

She went from a photographer who did everything to a photographer who really focused on the archival and keepsake designer. She started focusing on albums, prints and wall prints.

Dana and her husband moved to San Diego for his job and quickly, Dana found herself laid off of her marketing job right after they purchased their first home. It was then that she realized that she wanted to try and make her photography business work full-time.

The MKTG Brand was born because Dana started taking on what she could get! Quickly, people started asking her to take headshots and branding photography for themselves or their company but they would have no strategy behind what kinds of photos they needed - much less how they were going to use them strategically. Once this started taking off, Dana realized that she needed to split the two brands so there wasn’t confusion!

But in the midst of building The MKTG Brand and pouring so much energy into a second business, Dana and Bob’s marriage was suffering. It wasn’t difficult to split the businesses on the business side of things but personally it was difficult.

When they finally realized what was going on in their personal lives they had to stop and check themselves. They always had talked about coming back to Chicago but this difficulty pushed them over the edge. They made the decision and moved within a week.

The hard thing about switching for Dana was that she had to start over. Again. But the thing that she keeps coming back to is that business and finances will always bounce back but relationships can’t always bounce back.

Dana and Bob have always focused on setting goals not only together but also supporting and helping each other’s dreams even if it means sacrificing. And all along the way keeping in touch and checking in with each other.

Dana at the end of the day is all about Mission-Driven Marketing. It means incorporating your personal life mission into your business. It’s a powerful way to attract your ideal clients in a way that aligns with your values and theirs!

3: Disrupting The Industry Standard and Niche Markets with Elsbeth Cool

Where can you find Four Star Family Cyclery?

Instagram: @fourstarfamilycyclery

Website: www.fourstarfamilycyclery.com

Elsbeth Cool is the owner of Four Star Family Cyclery. She and her husband, Nate have been car-less for 10 years all while have two babies in between. Elsbeth has been riding cargo bikes since the beginning which eventually inspired her to start FSFC 7 years later.

The biking industry is largely athletic men who tend to scoff at women riders who want to use biking as a mode for transportation - especially with kids. Elsbeth saw an opening in the industry after hearing countless stories of women who had poor experiences at bike shops. There is also a specialized knowledge set that comes with owning and caring for a cargo bike. So she decided to turn her industry on its head in multiple ways by opening up a cargo bike-focused shop that is by appointment only. Her friends who also owned bike shops and were in their retail spaces 6-7 days a week said it would never work but FSFC is thriving.

Elsbeth hardly does any traditional marketing - she relies heavily on referrals from her customers! She also never got traditional funding either - she started small and didn’t go into debt in order to start her business - she feels like this keeps you from feeling like you’re being ruled by your business.

They are a 100% family friendly business and have all sorts of things to entertain the youngest members of the family while the parents are testing out the bikes!

Eric and Sabriah met in College after their brother played matchmaker. Eric graduated with a degree in Special Education and Sabriah is a proud college drop out pursuing dance! They quickly fell head over heels and a year and a half later got engaged and married. From the beginning of their relationship, It was always the plan that Eric would start his own photo/video company but it felt like more of a 10 year goal, especially after finding themselves pregnant with their first baby, Scout.

Eric quickly found himself essentially working two full-time jobs which was not sustainable for their family and in 2016 he went full time with Eric Floberg, Inc. In that same year he found himself founding a studio space with four other guys called Creative Club Chicago.

After their second, Theo, was born Eric’s business was thriving while Sabriah was a dance teacher - which was her passion. It became apparent that the dance world was losing it’s appeal and the Floberg’s newly purchased condo that needed to be renovated was becoming something Sabriah loved. Eric convinced her to pursue her new found love of interior design as a side hustle and Nestled Home was born! Sabriah quit her job at the studio, was able to stop scrambling for babysitters and started working from home and having much more flexible hours.

Eric and Sabriah have had to make some decisions based on each of their desires, especially with Nestled Home, as they both navigate Sabriah starting her own thing and differences in personalities.

We also talk about the ups and downs of owning your own business as Eric shares about his struggles with depression in the midst of another transition year for him in his business. This has lead them to discover tangible ways for their whole family to unplug and refocus. They have also leaned into what they find important and valuable in their lives - getting quality time with their two boys (and one on the way)! They walk us through the challenges of balancing their family life while working two jobs, transitioning to full-time wedding photography and beyond.
